Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability.
→학문은 기쁨, 꾸밈, 그리고 일처리 능력을 하는데에 도움을 준다.
Their chief use for delight is in privateness and retiring;
→기쁨을 위해 가장 중요한 활용은 사적일때 있고 혼자(retiring) 물러나 있을때이다;
for ornament is in discourse; and for ability is in the judgement and disposition of business;
→꾸밈을 위한 것은 대화에 있습니다; 그리고 일처리 능력을 위한 것은 사업시 판단능력과
일처리(disposition) 능력에 있습니다;
for expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one;
→전문적인 사람은 개별적인 일을 수행하고 판단 할 수있다. 하나씩, 하나씩;
but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs come best from those that are learned.
→그러나 일어나는 일의 총체적인 고려사항, 연구, 정리는 배운사람으로부터 온다.
To spend too much time in studies is sloth;
→학습에서 너무 많은 시간을 보내면 게을러 집니다.
;to use them too much for ornament is affectation;
→꾸밈을 위해 그것들을 너무 많이 효용하면 허식(affectation)이다;
to make judgement wholly by their rules is the humour of a scholar;
→그들에 의해 전적으로 판단되어 지는 규칙은 학자의 변덕(humour)이다;
they perfect nature, and are perfected by experience;
→학문은(they) 사람의 천성(nature) 완성시키고(perfect) 경험에 의해 완성된 것이다;
for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need proyning by study;
→천성적으로 타고난 능력은 자연적 식물과 같다, 그것은 학문에 있어 가지치기가 필요하다;
and studies themselves do give forth directions too much at large, except they be
bounded in by experience.
