People have strong feelings about where they live, and an office is where many people spend much of their day.
That is why this article, about two opposing ways of designing officer space, should be of interest to many readers.
The traditional office is a network of "caves"― that is, closed-in offices with doors.
The offices are arranged according to a worker`s status in the company;
top executives have big caves in the corners with windows on two sides;
→고위 경영진은 두면에 창문이 달린 구석에 있는 큰 밀폐된 공간을 갖는다;
lower workers have smaller caves leading up to the corners, some with windows and some without.
This arrangement, however, is expensive, for much floor space is required, and it does not promote communication among workers.
Opposed to this system is the one that uses "cubes," or cubicles―minioffices that have low walls and no doors and are arranged more or less democratically.
In this environment everybody has equal space and an equal lack of privacy.
The arrangement saves money and encourages teamwork and, incidentally, permits the boss to keep an eye on what every body is doing.
The debate over which arrangement is best arouses passion, for it involves opposing ways of living, even differences in personality type.
