Ⅰ. 신대륙에 대한 안내서
* 최초의 작가들은 신대륙에 대한 영국인의 exploration(탐험)과 colonization(식민(화))을 묘사한 영국사람들.
* 그 당시 초기 작품을 읽던 독자들의 특징
① move를 planning하는 사람들의 travel guide로써 읽었다.
- facts와 fantasy를 mix해놓는 그 당시의 특징을 가져서 안내서로 쓰기에는 dangerous했다.
② 실제로 가볼 수 없는 곳에 대한 상상적 여행(imaginary voyage)을 즐기기 위해 읽었다.
1. Captain John Smith
* 실제로도 모험가인 그는, 그 당시 두 가지 유형(both kinds)의 독자들을 모두 satisfied 시키는 작품을 저술.
* True Relation of Virginia, Description of New England 같은 작품은 신세계에 정착하고자 하는 사람들에게 fascinating(매혹적인) advertisement로서 역할을 하였다.
* 작품
① General Histories of Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles
- 그가 인디언공주(포카혼타스)에 의해 rescue되는 내용.
- 미국 문학에서 최초로 유명한 이야기.
Ⅱ. Puritans
* 남부의 plantations(대규모농장)의 소유주들을 비롯한 남부인들은 their own(그들자신의)문학을 발전시키는데 slow(게을리)했다. ⇒ 오히려 수입한 영국책을 더 prefer.
* New England지방은 주 setter(이주자)들이 영국에서 건너온 Puritans들이었다.
- society는 반드시 the laws of God(신의 율법)을 based on 하여야 한다고 믿었고, 이로 인해 문학이 남부보다 훨씬 더 빨리 발전했다.
- 문화 교육의 발상지 BOSTON
# colony 최초의 대학인 Harvard는, 새로운 청교도 목사들을 수련시키기 위해 Boston에 세워짐
