CHAPTER.20 Language Assessment: Principles and Issues
DEFINING TEST and ASSESSMENT
*Test
: a method of measuring a person's ability or knowledge in a given domain, with an emphasis on the concept of method and measuring.
->carefully designed, identifiable scoring methods, specified time periods.
:subsets of assessment
*Assessment
: an ongoing process that encompasses a much wider domain.
*informal assessment
: What you're doing when you're "coaching" your students and giving them feedback.
-> incidental, unplanned comments and responses like "Nice job!" "Did you say can or can't?" "You go to the movie yesterday?" or a marginal comment on a paper.
->a good deal of a teacher's informal assessment is embedded in classroom tasks designed to elicit performance but not with the intent of recording results and making fixed judgements about a student's competence.
