1. 연구 목적 및 방법한 작가의 작품을 평가하는 데 있어 다른 작가의 작품과의 비교분석을 통해 평가하거나 두 작품을 상호 대비분석으로 평가하는 방법이 드물지 않게 활용되는 문학 연구기술의 한 부분이라는 전제 아래 신상웅, 「『三代』와 『太平天下』」, 『中央大學校 藝術大學 創論』, 中央大學校 韓國藝術硏究所, 2000.
본고는 염상섭의 『삼대』와 채만식의 『태평천하』를 대비, 분석하여 두 작품의 상호 관련성과 각각의 특수성을 규명하는 것을 연구 목적으로 한다.
두 소설의 작품의 성취도에 비해서는 이미 많은 연구가들에 의해 다각적으로 검토되어 왔고, 이들 작품은 여러 문학사 기술을 통해 문학사적 위상이 확실히 자리 매김 되었다. 게다가 두 소설이 명백히 공유하고 있는 유사성과 차이점에 대한 다양한 검토들이 많이 있었다.
작가에 의해 선택된 등장인물들의 성격은 곧 작가가 현실을 관찰하는 관점과 삶의 목적을 드러내는 것이다. 그러므로 본고에서는 위와 같은 연구와 더불어, 두 작품의 중심인물의 성격과 문학 작품의 성향, 주제의 형상화에 미친 작가의 의식과의 관계를 알아보고자 한다. 한편 작가 의식은 소설의 유형을 통해 주제의식을 구현한다. 그 유형 속에서 펼쳐지는 중심인물들의 행동은 그 작품의 특성을 규정짓는다. 따라서 같은 시대적 배경 속에서 중심인물의 성격을 비교하여 분석하는 연구는 작품의 특성과, 주제의 설득력 있는 방식의 표출이라는 의미를 가지고 있다고 본다.
