Introduction
Socio-economic systems which affect corporate management have gradually changed as the 20th century passed by; the 20th century can be characterized by the arrival of capitalism and the emergence of globalization. Since the Soviet Union disintegrated in 1989 and communism failed, capitalism has been facilitated and corporations have become one of the driving forces of progress. Under communism, all the goods produced in a country were distributed equally to the people, whereas capitalism allowed people to maximize profits and have their own private property.
In the middle of the capitalism-based period, however, several American companies started facing some problems in their businesses due to the loss of their credibility. For example, the Enron Corporation and WorldCom, both of which were respectable American enterprises, eroded their reliabilities by committing fraud on recording accounts. Since these cases, the main concern of corporate management was shifted from economic growth to the environment, ethics, and social contributions. These three factors show a company’s efforts to be responsible for society, and they become an integral part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), a principle of managing a company.
