In the 1960s and 1970s family therapy grew form early experiments of the pioneers of the system approach to a well established business. Family therapy drew thousands of adherents, representing a wide range of backgrounds and interests. However, with the death of retirement of many of the pioneers of the systems approach and the absence of dominating figures to replace them, family therapy in the 1980s underwent a gradual transformation. Family therapy was one of many social sciences which could not escape from the postmodern revolution. The 1990s saw the field of family therapy moved in two opposing directions concerning the understanding of human systems. One direction was an extension of the traditional and prevailing paradigm in the social science. The other direction evident in the family therapy field was based on the new ideas and assumptions of constructivism and social construction. Family therapists who welcome those new theories of the postmodern ear were called as the postmodern family was too mechanistic and controlling. therefore, they began to shift their focus form action to narrative, and form challenging to collaborating.
Therapists in the postmodern world were challenged to become more compassionate, curious. and sensitive to differences of families they saw. They also were asked to collaborate in opening up new realities or new world of possibilities, with families. More attention was given to qualities of the therapist-client relationship than over before. It reflects that the field of family therapy is maturing and rejected by postmodern therapists, so will be the postmodern thinking by another new approaches The family therapy field hasn't stood still in recent years. We can be sure that family therapy is open to new possibilities that future years will bring.
