This study tested the validity of the Family Environment Scale-Korean Version (FES-K) to assess family environmental characteristics in Korean sample. The original Family Environment Scale (FES), a self-report 90-item measure developed by Moos and Moos(1981), can help people better understand their family, learn how other family members perceive the family, and become more aware of how their behavior and ways of coping affect the family. Questionnaire were completed by 660 parents with teenagers attending to several high schools. In response to the correlations between 10 sub-scales and its 90 items on the original American version, 5 items removed. In addition, Confirmatory Factor Analyses to test of its content validity suggested to get rid of 13 items. Therefore, the FES-K was composed of 72 items in 9 subscales, comparing to the FES that has 90 items in 10 subscales. Reliability coefficients (Cronbach's alpha) for each subscale ranged from .45 to .77. To evaluate criterion validity, correlation analyses between the FES-K and the Korean version of FACES by Kim(1998), the FSDS by Lee(2000) were computed. In general, the FES-K was relatively high correlated with the Korean version of the FACES, but was modest correlated with the FSDS. Lastly, the FES-K had good discriminate power (60.8%) when comparing academic and technical high school groups in Korea. Therefore, the Korean version of FES seems to be a valid and reliable measure.
