이 연구는 청각적 중재(엄마 목소리 / 엄마 노래 소리 / 엄마 노래 소리를 뺀 피아노 반주)에 대해 유아가 보이는 즉각적인 반응의 잠복시간(latency)과 지속시간(duration)을 알아본 것이다. 연구의 대상은 서울특별시에 소재한 C교회와 P교회에 출석하는 영아 30명이었다. 대상자들의 개월 수는 3～8개월이었으며 영아의 개월 수간 반응의 차이를 비교하기 위해서 3～4개월 / 5～6개월 / 7～8개월 단위로 구분하였다. 이 연구를 위해 선정된 동화책은 『이솝 이야기1』에 실린 “바람과 해님”이었으며, 연구자가 동화책의 내용을 바탕으로 3분 길이의 곡을 작곡하였다. 각 영아의 어머니가 직접 엄마 목소리 자극과 엄마 노래 소리 자극을 녹음하였으며, 엄마 노래 소리를 뺀 피아노 반주 자극의 경우 연구자가 “바람과 해님”을 통제된 환경 속에서 직접 연주하여 녹음하였다. 한편, 청각자극 제시의 순서 효과를 배제하기 위해 각 영아의 어머니가 뽑은 청각자극 제시 표에 맞춰 녹음된 자극을 CD로 편집하였다. 이 연구는 청각자극 유형과 영아의 개월 수에 대한 잠복시간 및 지속시간의 차이가 집단 간에 유의미한 차이를 보이는 것으로 나타났으며 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 청각자극 유형에 대한 latency의 차이는 엄마 목소리 자극에서 영아들의 latency가 가장 짧게 나타났다. 둘째, 영아의 개월 수에 대한 latency의 차이는 7～8개월 영아의 latency가 가장 짧게 나타났다. 셋째, 청각자극 유형에 대한 duration의 차이는 엄마 노래 소리 자극에서 영아들의 duration이 가장 길게 나타났다. 넷째, 영아의 개월 수에 대한 duration의 차이는 7～8개월 영아의 duration이 가장 길게 나타났다. 이상의 결과는 영아에게 초기 중재로써 엄마의 목소리와 노래 소리가 효과적인 자극물임을 시사하는 내용이었다.

This study was to examine various responses of infants to different tones through auditory stimulation and by comparing the latencies and durations of their immediate responses to each medium (mother's voice / mother's singing / piano sound without mother's singing) find appropriate initial media stimuli needed for their development/ growth. Subjects of this study were 30 infants attending 2 churches (Church C and Church P) in Seoul. Subjects were 3～8 months old in age and they were categorized into 3 different groups (3～4 months old / 5～6 months old / 7～8 months old) in order to compare the differences in their responses according to age. The story of "The Wind and the Sun" appearing in『Aesop's Fables 1』was selected for this study and the researcher composed a 3 minute-long piano music based on the story. Each infant's mother personally made a recording of the stimulation of the mother's voice and the mother's singing. In the case of the stimulation of the piano sound without the mother's singing, the researcher personally played and recorded "The Wind and the Sun" in a controlled setting. Meanwhile, for the purpose of ruling out the effect of the order in which the stimuli were presented, each infant's mom was allowed to draw an auditory stimuli presentation table and the stimuli were recorded and created into a CD. The study found that there are significant differences between groups in term of their latencies and durations over the type of auditory stimulation and the infant’s age in months. The findings are as follows. First, latency differences about types of auditory stimulation turned out to be the shortest in the case of the mother's voice. Second, latency differences according to their age, latencies were the shortest in infants 7～8 months old. Third, duration differences on the types of auditory stimulation turned out to be the longest in the case of the mother's singing. Fourth, duration differences according to their age durations were the longest in infants 7～8 months old. These results led to the conclusion that mother's voice and singing can be effective stimuli to infants as initial media.
