The purpose of this research was to exam the positive influence of music therapy on the abused child who continues to show unstable emotions by expressing pressed emotions. This study was done from March 25th, 2004 to October 27th, 2004, on Eun-A (alias, 11 years old), who was physically and emotionally abused, and currently stays in children's shelter. Eun-A had been frequently abused by her alcoholic father physically and emotionally, and entered a fostering center by the help of the Child Abuse Protection Center. At that time, she showed severe emotional anxiety owing to pressed emotions and unstable attachment and had difficulty in social relationships and adjustment to the environment due to mood swings and aggressive actions by her manic-depressive psychosis.Music became a safe place to her, who was subconsciously looking for it. Also the unconditional support, sympathy, and respect for her worked as a foundation which helped her to cure herself. During music therapy, Eun-A sought psychological stableness about her feelings of her mother through songs and recreated music playing, also gained emotional catharsis through expressing her pressed anger by impromptu playing. Also, she could find her wounded self through a metaphorical way which allowed her to project herself through imagination with music and playing, experience in healing herself and contain her emotional stableness.
