This study investigates students' argumentation and mathematical justification in inquiry-oriented learning guided by Realistic Mathematics Education. The research design consisted of ten teaching experiments conducted with 15 eighth-grade students. All of the sessions were videotaped and qualitative evidence from pre and post interviews were collected. As for argumentation, the results showed that the structure of students' argumentation was developed from simple, multiple to complex one. Students' mathematical justifications which were categorized into authoritative, empirical, pre-formal and formal one depending on the characteristics of the tasks. The frequency of the justifications increased steadily and the strategies were developed from arithmetic to algebraic one. Thus, these findings indicated that
mathematical justifications were the driving force of qualitative development of the structure of students' argumentation. Questions of students and teacher played a scaffolding which extend the structure of students' argumentation and facilitate mathematical justification.
The findings of the study shed new lights on the rich and thick understanding of students' argumentation and mathematical justification.
