The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the economic strain, family function, and social support on middle school students' problem behaviors along with the interaction effects of those factors according to gender. The results were as follows:
First, statistically significant differences in the extent of aggression were found according to religion and economic status. Difference in delinquency level was also observed depending on economic status, and the region where they live.
Second, higher level of family conflict and economic strain had effects on aggression. Family conflict was the most significant factor on delinquency followed by economic strain and social support. Anxiety- depression and withdrawal were explained by family conflict and social support.
Third, interaction effects of economic strain, family function, and social support on middle school students' problem behaviors were found in female adolescents. Girls grown up in economically strained family who received more social support showed lower aggression level than those with lower level social support. However, girls who experienced frequent family conflict and perceived higher social support tend to show higher aggression level than those who perceived lower social support. Further study needed to explain the role of perceived social support of adolescents.
