The purpose of this paper is to explore perceptions of exemplary social studiesteachers in terms of teaching, learning, and assessment under the national
curriculum. With a mixed methods approach, this study collected various data from
26 exemplary present elementary and secondary teachers working in either a city
or a province. The findings of this research are as follows. First, the results of our
survey research indicated that present teachers had little appreciation for the
current revolutionary national curriculum primarily because of its lack of practical
value at the classroom level. Second, data from three qualitative case studies
revealed that due to the existing problem of oversized classrooms, present teachers
had not as much opportunity as needed to teach creativity and critical thinking skills
in their everyday teaching practice. Third, formative and performance assessment
was being used more than in the past and thus is being incorporated into everyday
teaching and learning. And fourth, participants had seemingly just started to pay
much attention to the issue of cross-cultural perspectives. Comparative research
needs to be conducted to figure out how teachers make sense of the complex
nature of inquiry-based, constructive, differentiated learning in different contexts.
