ABSTRACT
The main purpose of this study is to derive implications for the improvement of
economic education in Korea, by understanding the efforts for economic education
and programs in US. For this purpose, this study summarizes the national content
standards in economics suggested by the NCEE, and standards in personal finance
by the Jump$tart.
In addition, this study analyzes two programs that have been so popular in US
elementary schools, mini-economy and JA programs. Mini-economy is a form of
economic instruction in which students participate in a classroom economy in
order to simulate real world economic activities. Mini-economy programs may
vary considerably, depending upon the individual teacher and the particular
instructional situation. Despite this variation, the Mini-Society by Marilyn
Kourilsky is the most widely used program in elementary schools. Owing much to
the effectiveness of the Mini-Society instructional system shown by many
experimental studies, and to the need for entrepreneurship education, the
Mini-Society/Yess! was developed by embedding the entrepreneurship education
curriculum within the Mini-Society framework.
JA programs are sequential and integrated programs for grades K-12, and
educated by volunteers. Students learn the basic concepts of business and
economics, and how education is relevant to the workplace, by using information,
applying basic skills, thinking critically, and solving complex problems.
