최근 몇 년간 극장가에서는 여러 명의 주인공이 등장하여 복잡하게 이야기를 전개하는 영화들이 늘어나고 있다. 기존의 영화들에 비해 상대적으로 훨씬 복잡한 인물 관계와 구성을 가진 이러한 영화들은 서서히 관객들에게 인정을 받게 되면서 점차 다양한 소재와 장르에 걸쳐 제작되고 있다. 기존의 상업 영화의 경우 시나리오 창작은 한 명의 주인공을 중심으로 하는 뚜렷한 기승전결을 통해 캐릭터의 변화와 사건의 해결을 보여줌으로써 관객에게 카타르시스를 느끼게 하는 방식이 가장 일반적이었다. 두 명 이상의 주인공이 등장하는 경우라 할지라도 이들은 한 가지 욕망을 공유하고, 욕망을 달성하기 위한 투쟁의 과정에서 구성원들이 생사고락을 함께 해야 하며, 성공과 고통을 나눠가지게 된다. 그런데 최근에는 대규모 관객 동원을 목표로 하는 상업영화의 틀 안에서도 새로운 성향을 가진 영화들, 즉 다양한 인물군과 다중적인 서사 구조를 특징으로 하는 영화들이 증가하고 있으며, 관객들도 이들 영화에 빠르게 적응하며 호응하고 있다.

영어 초록

Films consisting of several protagonists and multiple plots have been increasing and getting more popular in Korea. However, traditional theories of narratives cannot analyze and describe their complex structures. The aim of this thesis was to investigate narrative structures in multi‐protagonist and multi-plot Korean films. We chose to analyze 17 multi-protagonist Korean films based on the top‐ten box‐office list from 1991 to 2006 including 6 multi-protagonist and single plot films to compare their narrative structures with those of multi-protagonist and multi-plot films. We utilized the plot diagram method which describes the role of protagonists in sequences and the relationships between sequences using circles and lines through scene‐by‐scene analysis. This diagram can graphically display the presence of subplots and their associations with the major plot as a function of playing time. We found that multi-protagonist and multi-plot Korean films exhibited several subplots, in which different protagonists played major roles. According to the location of events and happenings and the completeness of narratives in subplots, multi-protagonist and multi-plot films were divided into three subtypes: the segmental multi-plot type, the satellite multi-plot type and the composite multi-plot type. Films in each subtype exhibited stable, similar topological structures of narratives. We suggest that multi-protagonist and multi-plot films demonstrate similar topological structures of narratives to those of multi-player online role playing games or real-time strategy games. To assess the box-office value of multi-protagonist and multi-plot films, we analyzed the box-office records for Korean films. We found that they were included in the top‐ten box-office list since 1998. We suggest that the annual increase in their box-office values arise from the non‐linear editing system in post‐production due to the development of digital technology and thus facilitating technological possibilities for complex plots. This study may provide us with insight into the development of integrative models for both traditional narratives and digital storytelling narratives such as multi-protagonist/multi-plot films and multi-player online role playing/real-time strategy games.
