This article is a case study of sitting meditation performed by 40 university students for 14 weeks. It is aimed to look into their changes of mind which are brought about by a series of classes about sitting meditation. To observe the changes of mind, this study uses the three Methods: (1) clinging scale-past fixation, lack of nowness, future fixation, fixed opinion, situational inflexiblity, desire obsession; (2) KHTP-knit house, tree, people; and (3) keeping the Sitting Meditation Diary. The Methods (1) and (2) are employed prior to the first class and after the 8th week classes, and Method (3) after the 2nd week classes. For the purpose of the study, the 90-minute class about sitting meditation opens twice a week. The theory and practice of sitting meditation are taught on a fifty-fifty basis. The practice portion of the class, designed to help the students with sati (mindfulness) training exercises, is comprised of diverse meditation sessions including body scan, breathing, walking, eating and yoga. This case was proceeded by constructed program of the Four Noble Truths including the theory and practice of sitting meditation and counselling with student meditators. Sitting meditation, the base of Annapanā sati suta (mindfulness of breathing), is woven into every aspect of one's daily life. It may lead to physical relaxation, greater concentration and awareness, serenity, insight into recess for the soul, to name but a few. At the initial stages of the practic* Department of Buddhism Counseling The Graduate School of Buddhist Culture Dongguk University.e sessions, the student meditators had difficulty in settling into a balanced posture. It was found, however, that over time they were increasingly committed to sitting meditation. Three to four weeks into the practice, they produced tangible results such as increased concentration, insight into the recesses of the mind, and mind healing. A few anxiety-stricken students regained some degree of stillness of mind and body. The sitting meditation practice, as therapy seeing and letting go, aims to help the meditators get out of their shell and ‘decondition’ themselves from emotion. This study finds that through sitting meditation, the students got an insight with which to realize what they really are, with the result that they came to better know their mind and accept themselves. It may be concluded therefore that one can solve their own problems through sitting meditation.
