The purposes of this study were to examine self-esteem of children ages 4 to 5 and theirparents in terms of general trends and differences depending on variables and to explore
the relationship between self-esteem of children and that of their parents. The subjects of
this study were 133 young children and their parents (133 fathers and 133 mothers), and the
research tools utilized were 'Self-Esteem Assessment for Young Children' and 'Index of
Self-Esteem' for parents. The overall findings of this study were as follows. First, when
analyzing the differences in young children's self-esteem according to their gender, age,
and the amount of time spending with their parents, the younger a child is and the more time
a child spends with his/her parents during weekend and holidays, the higher the child's
self-esteem score is. Second, when analyzing the differences in parents' self-esteem
according to their age, education, occupation, and the average of monthly income, the more
education a parent has received and the more a parent earns, the higher the parent's
self-esteem score is. In addition, mothers working in an administrative position have higher
self-esteem than mothers in any other jobs. Third, in terms of the relation between young
children's and their parents' self-esteem, there is a positive relationship between young
children's self-esteem (total, cognitive, social, family-acceptance) and their parents'
self-esteem. Also, there is a positive relationship between young children's emotional
self-esteem and mothers' self-esteem.
