웹 기반 수업 의 융통적 특성은 학습의 내용， 경로， 속도 둥에 대한 선택의 자율성을 제공해 줌으로써 자가 주도적인 학습을 가능케 한다. 자율적이고 자기 주도적인 학습환경은 학습자의 학습내용에 대한 깊이 있는 야혜와 인지적 능력의 획득에 도움을 줄 수 있기는 하지만 방향감 상실이나 인지적 과부하 둥의 부작용도 지적되고 있다. 따라서 자율적 웹 기반 수업 환경이 학습에 향쌍 도움야 되는 것은 아니며， 학습효과는 학습상황에의존한다고 할 수 있다. 학습자띄 채별척 특성은 학습상황 변얀들 중 가장 중요하게 고려되었던 요인이다. 특힘 원쩍으로 。l루어;;:.1는 웹 71반 수업 환경에서는 학습자 특셈이교실수업환경에서 보t:J- 훨씬 다양하고 학습과정 중예 교사의 직캡적인 도움을 줄 수 없다는 점에서 학습자에게 적용적 수업환경의 제공이 필요하다. 교수-학습 이론 관점에서적응적 웹 기반 수엽의 체념은 구성주의적 학습이론을 보다 적극적으로 실현하기 위한방안이라고 할 수 있지만 현재까지 개발된 적웅적 웹 기반 수업 시스템들은 과거 I염(Inte뻐gentTutoring Sys않m)의 반복연습올 통한 지식과 거술의 습득에 치중하고 있으며， 협동학습을 포함하는 학습자간 사회적 상호작용을 통한 학습을 고려하지 못하는 단점을 지니고 있다. 웹 기반 수업이 학습자에게 보다 실질적이고 교육적연 적웅성을 제공해 주기위해서는 학습자간 상호작용 과정을 적웅시킬 필요성이 있다. 학습자간 상호작용애 초점을 둔 척웅적 수업환경은 지금까지 개발된 적웅적 웹 기반 수업의 기술적， 교수-학습이론척 한겨썽을 보완해 줄 수 있을 것이다.

The flexibility of Web-based instruction enables self-directed learning environment by offeringlearners f!'€€dom to choose their own learning contents and to Ieam at their ownpace and sequence_ Self-direcW learning environment that web-baS€d instruction provideshelps learners develop their oognitive abilities as well as deeper understandings of learningobjectives_ However it is also well known research findings that learners can be lost inc􀀩'berspaC€ and oognitively overloaded, v.wch severely limits learning effects. Therefore selfdirectEdlearning environment of web-based instruction does not always result in effectivelearning. Instead, the effects of web-basEd instn.JCiion d€p8nd on learning environment., especiallylearners' characteristics. To oonsider learners' characteristics is especially importantin web-based learning environment because distant learners are more diverse than those inclassrooms. Furthermore it is difficult for the distant learners to get immediate guides orsupports from their teachers while the y navigate or &lIve problems.Adaptive web-based instruction systems change t heir interraoos SJ that it can accommo­date different learners' goals, learning styles, cognitive abilities, and preferences usingadaptive technologies. It is strongly urged that adaptive web-rnsed instruction has JXltentialto actively help learners oonstruct their own knowledge and understanding by providingadaptive coaching, modeling, and scaffolding. However the educational potential of adaptiveweb-based instruction has not yet realized. From learning theory perspective, most adaptiveweb systems developed so far do not consider interaction for collaborations among learners,which is regarded as a critical learning process for developing higher-order thinking skillsand knowledge construction. Therefore, adaptive web-based systems developed so far areincomplete in terms of learning theory perspective. It is also argued that knowlEdge-basedmodels of most adaptive web-based instruction systems are not accurate in that knowledgerepresentations of how learners learn and solve ill-defined problems are not wel l knownyeL To be more adaptive, web-based. instruction should be able to accommodate learners' characteristics in tenns of their interaction behaviors while they learn by collal:xlration. It isalso expected that adaptive collaooration environment of web-based instruction may reduceknowledge model-related limitations of independent adaptive web-based instruction.
