본 연구는 최근 인터넷을 활용하여 가상의 공간에서 이루어지는 교수-학습체제를 일컴는 대표적인 용어로 사용되고 있는 가상교육(v띠ual education)과 사이버교육(CJ뼈red‘ucation)이라는 용어가 갖고 있는 근본적인 개념이 무엇인지， 그리고 그 개념들이 교육적으로 어떤 의미로 해석되고 사용될 수 있는지에 대하여 분석해 보고자 하였다.가상교육의 개엽을 이해하는데 있어서는 원격교육의 관점에서 가상교육을 어떻게 이해할 수 있는지， 그리고 ‘가상’이라는 말의 의미를 가장 잘 설명해 주는 ‘가상현실(virtualreality)’의 특성을 고려할 때 가상교육을 어떤 의미로 해석할 수 있는지에 대해 검토하였다. 사이버교육의 개념을 파악하기 위해서는 ‘사이버’의 어원이 ‘사이버네틱스(cybemetics)’임을 밝히고， 사이버교육을 이해하는데 핵심적 개념으로 동장하는 ‘사이버공간( cyberspaæ)'의 의미를 다양하게 탐색한 뒤， 그러한 사이버공간을 물리적， 심리적， 사회적， 정보적 개념으로 이해할 때 사이버교육의 의미가 어떻게 달라질 수 있는지를 살펴봄으로써 사이버교육의 의미 이해를 위한 주요 시각들을 제시하였다.끝으로， 가상현실의 관점에서 본 가상교육의 활용 가능성과 사이버공간을 심리적， 사회적 측면에서 본 사이버교육의 의미에 관한 논점을 제기함으로써， 가상교육과 사이버교육의 개념적 논의가 갖고 있는 교육공학적 시사점을 검토하였다.

영어 초록

This study aims to analyze and investigate the concept and educational implication ofvirtual education and cyber education from the viewpoints of 'virtual reality', cybernetics'and 'cyberspace'.Virtual education is the compound word of 'virtual' and 'education', and its meaning canbe considered in terms of distance education and virtual reality. Virtual education is a educationusing new information & communication technology and with possible or potentialexperience. Especially, it should be considered that virtual education is not fake, false education,but imaginable, realizable, or potential education because 'virtual' has the meaning ofbeing in essence or effect, not in facLFor understanding the meaning of cyber education, first of all, it is important to knowetymological origin of the word 'cyber'. The word 'cyber' stems from 'cybernetics' which isoriginated by Dr. Wiener. Cybernetics is the comparative study of organic control andcommunication systems, such as the brain and its neurons, mechanical or electronic system,robots, computers. Therefore, The concept of cyber education as compound word of 'cybernetics'and 'cyber education' can be considered as teaching and learning activity guided byartificial intelligence or cyborg.Cyber education also can be understood as compound word of 'cyberspace' and 'education'.Cyberspace, originated by W. Gilmn, science fiction novelist, is used and interpretedas various meaning in rocial science, philosophy, and psychology in these days. Cyberspacein modem perspective is an physical space which is emerged through high performancecomputers and world wide networks. Moreover, it is considered as the psychological space,social space, and information space according to different points. Thus, it is useful to considerthe various meaning of cyberspace and its educational implication for understandingthe meaning of cyher education properly.
