본 연구는 멀티미디어 보조학습에서 언어정보와 시각정보의 통합과정에 관여하는 작동기억 기제를 밝히고자 초등학생 116명을 대상으로 실험을 하였다. 피험자들이 언어정보와 시각정보를 통합할 때 이차과제 제시방법을 통해 연구문제를 분석한 결과, 예상과는 달리 이차과제의 수준이 증가함에 따라 통합과제의 성취도는 수준간에 유의한 차이를 나타냈다. 또한 장기기억에서 인출한 정보와 새롭게 지각한 정보를 통합할 때에도 통합과제의 성취도는 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 이 결과는 에피소드 버퍼가 언어적 작동기억, 시․공간적 작동기억과 상호작용을 하며 기능을 한다는 점을 제외하고는 Baddeley(2000)의 작동기억 이론과 일치한다. 본 연구결과는 멀티미디어 보조학습에서 정보의 통합과정에 관여하는 작동기억 기제는 Paivio(1986)의 이중부호화 이론이나 Mayer 등(2002)의 멀티미디어 학습에 관한 인지이론, Baddeley(1986, 1996, 1998)의 작동기억 모형 패러다임보다는 Baddeley(2000)의 작동기억 수정모형의 패러다임으로 설명되어야 한다는 것을 시사한다.

영어 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the working memory mechanism underlying integration of the verbal information with the visual in the multimedia assisted learning. According to Baddeley(2000), the study assumes that the verbal and visual information is separately stored in the two working memory subsystems, phonological loop and visuospatial sketchpad for short time and that the central executive associates the two kinds of information and stores the information concerning the link in the episodic buffer. The study anticipated that when subjects were asked to associate the verbal and visual information performing the secondary tasks to suppress the phonological loop and the visuospatial sketchpad, the performance of the association tasks would not decrease even though the performance of the secondary tasks would decrease. The subjects were 116 fifth and sixth elementary school students.The findings from the study were as follows:There were significant differences in performance of the association tasks and in the performance of the secondary tasks as the suppression level increased. In addition, there were significant differences in the achievement of association tasks when the subjects were asked to associate the newly perceived information with the information recalled from their long term memory.The results of the study partly support Baddeley(2000) except for that the episodic buffer play roles interacting with the phonological loop and the visuospatial sketchpad.The findings suggest that the central executive associates the verbal and visual information and temporarily stores the code about the relationship between the two kinds of information in the episodic buffer even if the verbal and visual information remain in the two working memory subsystems.Key words : multimedia-aided-instruction, cross-modal association, verbal information, visual information, working memory, episodic buffer
