본 연구는 웹 기반 학습 환경에서 전자 텍스트 문서 공간의 이해를 도와줄 수 있는 시각적 조직자(visual organizer)를 개발하고 그 효과성을 알아보는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 이론적 탐구를 통해 전자 텍스트의 시각적 설계를 위해 필요한 원리와 전략들을 파악하였고 시각적 조직자의 조작적 개념 및 시각적 조직자의 프로토타입을 구안하였다. 그리고, 구안된 시각적 조직자를 개발하고 실행해 봄으로서 실제 학습과정에서 효과적이었는지를 확인하였다.시각적 조직자의 효과성을 확인하기 위하여 대학생 123명을 대상으로 통제집단을 포함한 총 여섯 개의 집단에 대해 시각적 조직자의 유형별로 객관적인 학습과제 수행도로서 텍스트 구조파악 및 내용이해의 정도를 측정하였다. 실험 결과, 텍스트 구조파악 점수에서는 전자 텍스트 문서의 이미지를 상징적 추상화 형태로 제공하면서 언어적인 개요와 구조적 단서를 함께 제공한 시각적 조직자 유형이 가장 높았으며(F=3.39, p〈.01), 텍스트 세부 내용이해 점수에서는 전자 텍스트 문서 이미지를 물리적으로 작게 축소한 형태만을 제시한 시각적 조직자 유형이 가장 높았다(F=4.27, p〈.01). 시각적 조직자는 전자 텍스트의 구조적인 속성을 반영하는 시각적 단서를 제시함으로써 텍스트 문서 집합을 공간적인 속성으로 인식할 수 있게 하여 텍스트의 구조파악에 효과를 나타낸다고 볼 수 있을 것 같다. 또, 시각적 추상화 형태의 그래픽은 전자 텍스트 문서를 공간적인 구조로 정렬함으로써 텍스트를 전체 형태(gestalt)로 지각하게 하고 텍스트의 위치, 형태나 길이, 분량, 단락 구분, 응집성 등 거시 구조에 대한 단서를 획득하게 하는데 도움을 준 것으로 판단된다.

영어 초록

The purpose of this study is to prepare design principles and utilization strategies of the visualorganizers, which enables learners to comprehend the text and to understand text structure better in the electronic document space. For the theoretical underpinnings of the visual design of electronic text, a variety of principles and strategies, techniques were examined, and then visual organizer's conceptual identification, design principles and a prototype were developed. In the process of identifying the principles of designing the visual organizers, wide range of relevant literatures were reviewed and analyzed. Four design elements were immerged to develop the Visual Organizers Prototypes: information representation styles(pictorial or verbal), degree of abstraction(concrete or abstract), visual verbal relationships(visual dominated or verbal dominated), dimension of visual intelligence(interpretation or operation). In order to verify quantitatively and qualitatively the learning effectiveness and usability of newly developed principles and strategies of the visual organizers, an experimental study was performed. In the experimental study, 123 undergraduate students were divided into 5 groups in order to verify the effectiveness of the developed visual organizers. The experiment was designed in such a way that it can depict the students' awareness of structure and comprehension of contents on social science document. And later the usability of the visual organizers was tested. Findings were as follows; The presentation of Type 5 organizer(abstraction +overview+structure) was most effective in awareness of structure in electronictext(F=3.39, p<.01). The presentation of Type 1 organizer (reduction) was most effective incomprehension of contents(F=4.27, p<.01). The results of this study seemed to demonstrate thepositive potential of visual organizers in designing electronic text. By reflecting structural attributes, by arranging text structures, and by providing the information of location, form and length the visual organizers seemed to provide vital information to the learners in e-learning situation.
