This study investigated the effects of positive interdependence and group processing on student interaction in online cooperative learning. 144 university students enrolled in one of three different universities(two in Seoul, and one in Daegu) participated in online cooperative learning activities. In this study, student interaction was measured by the total number and the several types of online messages which each student posted in his/her online discussion room. All 2766 online messages were categorized into the five types of student interaction: 1) sharing and comparing of information, 2) discovery of dissonance and inconsistency among ideas, concepts, or statements, 3) negotiation of meaning and co-construction of knowledge, 4) testing and modification of proposed synthesis or co-construction, and 5) agreement statements and applications of newly-constructed meaning. All participants received initial instruction about teamwork skills and cooperative learning and were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups in each course. The “positive interdependence” and the “group processing” groups received subsequent associated skills training. The “no structure” control group received no additional training. The results indicated that the “positive interdependence” and the “group processing” groups interacted to a greater extent than the “no structure” groups. They also indicated that “positive interdependence” and “group processing” strategies were particularly more effective than “no structure” strategies in increasing both “sharing and comparing of information” and “discovery of dissonance and inconsistency among ideas, concepts, or statements” interactions. In addition, they showed that “positive interdependence” strategies were more effective than “group processing” strategies on “sharing and comparing of information,” whereas “group processing” strategies were more effective on “negotiation of meaning and co-construction of knowledge.”Key words : online cooperative learning, positive interdependence, group processing
