In an attempt to approach Buddhist counselling based on the comparison of Yogacara Buddhism Trisvabhava Theory and Person-Centered Counselling, this study aims at integrating related theories. To this end, the study categorizes such concepts as the characteristics of person-centered counselling, the structures of human psychology and attributes defined by Yogacara Buddhism, the comparison of person-centered counselling and Trisvabhava theory, and the basic principles and methods of Yogacara Buddhist counselling. Based on this categorization, the study tries to construct the counselling process of Trisvabhava theory. The study conducts the followings: First, regarding the characteristics of person-centered counselling proposed by Carl Rogers, it examined the basic elements that cause psychological problems in human understanding. Second, the study examined the Yogacara literature related to the structure and function of the mind, the essence of the Yogacara Buddhist theory, and the pain, ego and morals for character building. It focused on the explanation of the significance of Trisvabhava theory in applying to the Buddhist counselling. Third, the study explored the unique characteristics of Yogacara Buddhism while pursuing the similarity and the difference between Yogacara Buddhism and the existing major counselling theories. Both Carl Rogers and Yogacara Buddhism understand human beings from the perspective of phenomenology and recognize the world we live as a subject reality. The study focused on the different views of Carl Rogers who emphasized self-differentiation and ego-expansion with Yogacara Buddhism which stresses super ego. Fourth, the study examined the counselling aspects, the unique traits and the limitation of Yogacara theory. Yogacara Buddhism provides far more sophisticated psychological structure called 'eight consciousness' and presents clear threshold for maturity: completely abandoning selfishness and understanding non-duality. Furthermore, Trisvabhava theory which explains the good and the evil, and moral neutrality lays a foundation for evaluating human sense of values and shows various ways to build character including the six paramitas, the four ways of embracing the world and the four unlimited states of mind. The results of the study should help us analyse the counselling elements of Trisvabhava theory and systematize the counselling principles and methods of Buddhism. In order to put the Buddhist counselling methods into practice, we need to transform the difficult terminology of Trisvabhava theory into general terms so that people can understand them easily without losing the original meaning of the theory and terms. Furthermore, the study will be able to contribute in establishing the Buddhist counselling study that can meet the demand of today's people so that the counselling study can be applied to in various ways. The Buddhist counselling is an in-depth study relevant to many fields. More substantial studies on Buddhist counselling are expected to be conducted in the future.* Department of Buddhism Counseling The Graduate School of Buddhist Culture Dongguk University.
