본 연구는 20세기 초반 영국에서 진행된 서구의 대안교육운동이라고 할 수 있는 신교육운동(New
Eduation Movement)이 우리의 대안교육운동의 발전을 위해서 제시해주는 시사점이 무엇인지를 도출
하고자 하였다. 이를 위해서 우선 영국 신교육운동을 개척한 선구적 학교들인 애보츠홈(Abbotsholme)
학교와 비데일즈(Bedales)학교가 보여준 ‘새학교(New School)'의 특징을 살펴본 후 20세기 초반 영국
에서 전개된 비권위주의 교육운동의 과정을 고찰하였다. 이어서 20세기 초반의 신교육운동이 20세기
중,후반 영국의 공교육과 교수법 및 교육과정에 미친 영향, 그리고 영국이 중심적 역할을 한 신교육운
동의 국제적 연대 기구인 신교육협회(New Education Fellowship)가 미친 영향의 내용을 정리 한 후,
영국 신교육운동이 대안교육운동으로 대표되는 민간부문의 교육개혁운동에 주는 시사점을 다음과 같
이 제시하였다. 첫째, 교육개혁은 전통과의 단절을 통해서 성취되는 것이 아니라 전통의 창조적 계승
속에서 획득되는 것이라는 점이다. 둘째, 교육개혁운동은 교육 자체에 대한 순수한 열의와 신념, 인간
에 대한 신뢰 속에서만 장기간에 걸쳐 온전히 진행될 수 있으며, 그 결과 국가교육 전체의 변화로까
지 이어질 수 있다는 점이다. 셋째, 교육개혁운동은 민간부문과 공교육부문의 대화적 관계에서만 거시
적이고 종합적인 성과를 거둘 수 있다는 점이다. 넷째, 교육개혁운동은 교육개혁가들간의 활발한 소통
을 통해서만 발전, 확산될 수 있다는 점이다. 다섯째, 지식인들이 교육개혁운동에 적극적으로 참여할
때 교육개혁운동이 더욱 객관성을 가지고 확산될 수 있는 가능성이 높아진다는 점이다. 끝으로 영국
의 신교육운동이 교육과 사회에 미친 영향은 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 여타의 사립학교들과 나아가서 공교육
에까지 점진적인 변화를 유도해 온 긴 역사적인 과정을 수반했다는 점이다.

영어 초록

This research explores how New Education Movement, what is so-called the western alternative
education movement progressed in the early 20th century of England, throws a new light on the
advanced future of Korean alternative education movement. Most of all, this research focuses on
the characteristics of 'New School' shown by Abbotsholme school and Bedales school which are
the pioneering schools of New Education Movement in England, and further examines the process
of the non-authorative education movement begun in the early 20th century of England. In
particular, this research analyzes how New Education Movement influences the public education,
teaching methods and educational process in the middle of 20th century, and also points out how
New Education Fellowship (the international community of New Education Movement) broadly
influences the education movements.
Ultimately this research leads into the following suggestions that New Education Movement
operates private, nonofficial education movement as the alternative education. First, the educational
reform movement cannot be achieved in the separation from tradition, but be accomplished in the
creative inheritance of tradition. Secondly, the educational reform movement demands the
educator's passion, belief and trust for human beings in the field of education, and in the
aftermath of long-term education, it can effect the change of national education on the whole.
Thirdly, the educational reform movement can be fully achieved in the continuous interaction
between private sector and public sector. Fourth, the educational reform movement requires for
the mutual understanding among the educational reformers for the improvement and expansion of
movement. Fifth, the intellectuals' active participation in the educational reform movement can
expand the movement with the well-balanced perspectives. Lastly, New Education Movement's
influence on the education and society stimulates the changes of private education through the
years; furthermore, New Education Movement involves the changes of public education in the
process of educational history.
