The purpose of Chemistry Pictorial Poem is to raise the public interests in chemistry byexpressing the contents of chemistry, which has been generally regarded more or less
unattractive; in order to achieve this goal, enticing words and pictures were used. The Korean
Chemical Society has been holding an annual contest of Chemical Pictorial Poem for middle
and/or high school students since 2006. The present study analyzed 645 pieces including the
prize-winners and the ones without any prizes from the first Chemistry Pictorial Poem contest
held in 2006; also, 111 pieces of prize-winners from 2006 to 2009 were examined. The chemistry
pictorial poems were first divided into written pieces and pictures for the analysis; written pieces
were then divided further into chemical change, chemical property and chemical structure. The former
two categories were divided into subcategories; the chemical change category included change of
state, combustion, dissolution, etc., while the chemical property category included usage, outlook
property, bonding structure, etc. The picture part of chemistry pictorial poems were analyzed with
respect to the items included in the pictures, and with respect to the function of pictures in
relation to the written part. A statistical analysis of the results showed the different images of
chemistry that middle and high school students have learned in their school chemistry classes.
The middle school students tend to represent simple chemical change and concrete, sensible
chemical properties such as usage, outlook property, and the function of matter, while the high
school students tend to represent various chemical change and even the abstract properties in
their chemistry pictorial poem. The emotion of pictorial poem showed different tendency
according to the degree which students experienced chemistry. The pictorial poem without prize
tend to focus on the phenomenal aspect, while the prize-winners tend to represent the chemical
principle and structure rather than the phenomena. This study can provide useful information
on the use of chemistry pictorial poem in education as the resources for feedback on students
learning chemistry in the view of multiple representation learning.
