The purpose of this study was to examine ecological aspects of students with low basic academicskills comparing with ones with basic or average academic skills based on the results of NAEA. For
this, we analyzed 21,940 elementary school students and 21,651 middle school students’ data. The
results showed that each group had big differences among ecological characteristics such as amount of
reading a month, time to study of one’s own accord, and private education, and degree of
conversation with parents, difficulty with beginning study, recognition on effective study strategies,
needs to be acknowledged from others, well-integrated relationship with teachers, preparations for
class, listening to teachers in class, understanding in class, attention in class, responding to teachers’
questions, utilizing learning materials, and awareness on reasons why they study language arts. In
addition, student-related factors that discriminate between students with low basic academic skills and
students with basic or average academic skills were analyzed through Logistic regression analysis
according to elementary or secondary school level respectively. Results were summarized and the
study implications were discussed.
