The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of an awareness-basedliteratherapy program for the low income household youths on the reduction of anxiety
and aggression. This program, composed of 12 sessions, applied Gestalt therapy to
reduce anxiety and aggression.
The hypotheses to be tested were as follows. Firstly, an awareness-based
literatherapy program will reduce anxiety of the low income household youths.
Secondly, an awareness-based literatherapy program will reduce the aggression of the
low income household youths.
The participants of this study were 148 middle-school students of 「the mentoring
program for multicultural-low income youths」. We chose more than 50 points
students from the anxiety and aggression test result as our primary subjects. And then
a group of 10( 3 boys and 7 girls who volunteered) were selected as the experimental
group randomly. The control group also consisted of 3 boys and 7 girls. This figure is
the same sexual ratio as the experimental group. No measures were taken to the
control group. All of these youths have low standard of living. Minority of students
live with a single parent or grandparents and have high anxiety and aggression. A
standardized Anxiety Test and Aggression Test was used to measure the students'
anxiety and aggression.
The experimental group was given literatherapy program and the control group was
given none. The program was conducted two times a week, each time taking 80
minutes and 12 sessions. Pre-test place before the program, and post-test during the
final session, and the follow up test 5 weeks after the program ended. One-way
analyses of variance were conducted to test the hypotheses of study.
Firstly, the hypothesis that the awareness-based literatherapy program will reduce
the anxiety of low income youth is verified.
Secondly, the hypothesis that the awareness-based literatherapy program will reduce
the aggression of low income youth is also verified.
In conclusion, it is statistically significant that the awareness-based literatherapy
program makes low income youths who has high anxiety and aggression tendency
reduce their anxiety and aggression.
