본 연구는 득통 기화를 중심으로 그의 삼교합일적 심성론 이해와 마음 공부론을 고찰하고자 한 것이다. 조선 선불교적 전통에서 추구하여 온 인간 완성과 교육의 과제가 무엇이었는지를 파악하여 마음의 평정과 지혜를 갖추는 공부론을 살펴보고자 하였다. 득통 기화는 자신의 스승이었던 무학대사와는 달리 저술을 많이 남겼던 인물이자 유불도 삼교의 관계를 체계적으로 이론화한 사람이다. 그는 유 불도의 근본 가르침을 각각 대본(大本), 진공(眞空), 곡신(谷神)이라 말했다. 그리고 불가를 뿌리, 도가를 싹, 유가를 잎에 비유했다. 이러한 삼교관에 따른 득통의 마음공부론은 마음을 고요하고 밝게 비추는 정혜(定慧) 공부, 덕행의 교화와 심복(心服), 그리고 만물일기(萬物一己)의 실천으로 집약된다. 여기에는 유가 현실주의와 이에 따른 교화와 덕행의 공부방법이 가미된 것으로 유가의 영향이 크다. 유가는 불교가 도덕적 관심을 갖지 않는다는 것과 통치규범이 부재하다는 것을 비판해 왔고 득통은 이에 부응하여 마음공부에 덕행의 실천을 이끌어내었다. 그러나 유가의 실천이 삼강오륜의 인간관계를 중심한 덕목이라면 득통이 새롭게 강조한 덕행은 우주중심적․만물중심적 도덕으로서 진정한 인(仁)은 ‘만물을 자기와 한 몸으로 여기는 것’에 있음을 강조했다.
영어 초록
This paper is focused on the thought of Deuktong-Gihwa around the idea of combination ofthree religions and mind-nature theory. And through understanding of the mind practice theory in
the Buddhist tradition of South Korea it is inquired the theory of pursuit the human perfection and
the whole task of education. Deuktong-Gihwa is Buddhist monk Muhak’s disciple. He left a lot of writing and theorized the relationship of three religions(Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism)
systematically. He said that the taught of three religions were each of principles of life(大本), sunya (空), Goksin(谷神). Deuktong likened three religions as Roots, shoots, leaves each. The theory of mind practice is to still mind and brightly illuminate the mind.(This is named Samadhi and Panna study)Also Deuktong-Gihwa is author of the book “Hyunjunglon(顯正論)”. In this book he said that the mean of Cheonsim(天心) in Confucianism is same the mind of Buddhism. He combined three kinds of religion. And he emphasized the mind practice to deliver and to keep the mind. Especially the mind practice of the mind to keep is not bound to the object in mind or remove the object in mind but only resign one’s original mind and concentrate on or keeps the original mind. To keep the original mind is to illuminate the world by bright wisdom and conduct to the others by right mind.
