This study aims to examine the actual aspects of elementary history class during theJapanese colonial era microscopically.
Accordingly, attention was paid to contemporary class guidelines and educational magazine
“A Study on Chosun’s Education.” The magazine, only one magazine for elementary education
during the Japanese colonial rule, covered all areas of elementary education including
curriculum, educational methods, evaluation, and guidance for living and contained detailed
information on the contemporary educational phenomena.
Thereupon, this paper studies the magazine’s characteristics and also its basic bibliographical
features. Furthermore, based on the teaching plans of history class, records of observing conferences, open lectures and class reviews, and also class criticisms, this study examines the actual aspects of elementary history class in that period through the aspects of open lectures and class criticisms and also studies the history class microscopically mainly through teachers’ fables and lectures and also research.
According to the result, teacher-centered class was the most frequent in that time. Especially,
there was much of the class which centered around teachers’ fables moving and impressing
students. In choosing contents for class, open lectures were conducted by selecting chiefly the figures who defended the Japanese Emperor system. In the aspect of class development or
discipline as well, the origin of today’s class was found; thus, the class culture also showed similar aspects.
Furthermore, it is required to make a following comprehensive study on “A Study on Chosun’s
Education”, only one magazine for elementary education during the Japanese colonial rule.
