This study investigated the effects of group art therapy using mandalas on the emotional intelligence of children. Participants for this study were 54 students in fifth grade at M elementary school in city B. They were divided into an experimental group of 27 and a control group of 27. The participants received 12 sessions of group art therapy, twice a week from Nov. 11, 2010 to Dec. 16, 2010. The instrument for this study was a 47-item scale of emotional intelligence, a modified version of Park, Choi, and Park's scale of emotional intelligence(2000). Data were analyzed on SPSS WIN program (version 12.0). A t-test was used to check the homogeneity between the groups. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to test for the statistical significance between group and test period. If an interaction was detected, the simple main effect was tested. Duncan's multiple range test was used to test for the significance between group and test period. The findings are as follows. First, group art therapy using mandalas was found to be effective in improving the emotional intelligence of children, with the interaction between group and test and the main effect between the groups being significant. In addition, group art therapy using mandalas promoted the participants' release of their emotions and behavioral reactions, thereby leading to reflections on themselves, and emotional control. These findings indicate that group art therapy using mandalas can be an intervention program to improve children's emotional intelligence at educational institutions.
