The aim of this study is to examine the self‐regulated food dining of 3-year-oldchildren at school. It is an experiential study of children and teachers in an
environment where children self‐regulate their food intake by their own will in their
classes, which used to be what teachers did for them. The participants are 20
three-year-old children and a teacher who share a classroom at a daycare center. The
data of the study was collected from participatory observation and in-depth interviews,
which included videos, photos and interview records from Aug. 11, 2011 through Oct.
31, 2011.
From the results of this study, it was found that self regulated dining resulted in
children’s changed appearance and teachers’ changed educational behavior. Children’s
changed appearance owing to self‐regulated food dining includes: 1) children who
reduced their resistance to food, 2) children who ate more food, 3) children who
decreased their stress, 4) children who became responsible for the chosen food.
Teachers’ changed educational behavior owing to self‐regulated food dining includes:
1) individually interacting with children in the habit of having an unbalanced diet, 2)
having casual chitchats with children during food distribution, 3) providing children
with freedom, opportunities for self‐control, and waiting for self‐control, 4) helping
children to autonomically control meal times, 5) reducing anger.
The study’s aim is to investigate a new dining system for 3-year-old children that
involves the children’s self regulated dining, and to compare it with the regular dining
system where teachers distribute the food to the children. It also implies that
education should take giving children opportunities for self control into consideration.
