Several dynasties in the Orient had an educational system called “Kyung Yun”, which was to educate the King on the throne by learned subjects for the purpose of good administration as well as His moral training according to Confucian ideas.
The very beginning of “Kyung-Yun” in the history of Korea dated back to the period of King Yae-Jong(1116 A. D.) in the Koryoo Dynasty. As an independent office, however, the system was established in the first year of King Tae-Jo(1392 A. D.) in the Yi Dynasty, and in the second year of King Se-Jong(1420 A. D.) the office was promoted to a higher government office. Since then the number of officials increased as many as to 21 including 3 Yung-Sa(high-ranking official).
Although the “Kyung- Yun” education was supposed to be conducted 3 times(in the morning, in the afternoon and at night) a day it does not seem to have been well carried out.
The contents of lectures to the King were at first from Confucian sacred books such as the Book of Changes, the Book of History, the Book of Songs, Ye-Ki(禮記), Choon-Choo(春秋) Dae-Hak(大學), Non-O(論語), Maeng-Ja(孟子), Joong-Yong(中庸), etc., and Chinese historical books such as Ho-Jun(胡傳), Choonchoo-Jwajun(春秋左傳), Choonchoo-Saki(春秋史記), Tonggam-Julmok(痛鑑節目), Kangmok-Sokpyun(綱目續篇) Songji-Julyo(宋之節要), etc. as well as Korean historical books such as Samguk-Saki(三國史記), Dongguk-Saryak(東國史略), Koryo-Junsa(高麗史), etc., and then later Sunghak-Jibyo(聖學輯要), by Yi I, the great Korean Confucian scholar, was added as text-books.
The fundamental purpose of the “Kyung-Yun” system which, under absolute monarchism, asked the King for national administration to study, discuss, think and behave according to the rules and patterns of moralists and philosophers in various periods, was reasonable and ideal to the good King in ruling the country. On the other hand, the system was burdensome and unnecessary to the unwise King or tyrant, and naturally the results were unfavorable.
The purpose of “Kyung-Yun” was not only reading good books and interpretating them repeatedly to the King but also attempting Him to realize the kind-hearted and gentle administration according to the Confucian principles.
The fact that the Confucian officials in the Yi Dynasty strongly asked the King to attend “Kyung-Yun” proves this. The unique system of “Kyung-Yun”which continuously provided with good qualificaton for the Kings who was apt to live in idleness and inactivity in the dynastic society will furnish mand leaders today with much information for the self-examination as well as the self-development. ☆
