[ABSTRACT]

The purpose of this study was to analyze the personality characteristice of Korean middle-aged men and women. The following specific problems were set forth for this purpose.1. What are the effects of psychosocial variables on Korean middle aged persons?
2. What are the effects of psychosocial variables on Korean middle agers' personality characteristics?
Two dimensions of personality characteristics have discriptive dimensions and the other clinical dimensions. Discriptive dimensions have classified 10 sub-facters. i. e., adjustment, stability, interiority, affiliation, generativity, achievement, responsibility, activity, aggression and masculinity factors. Clinical dimensions have 4 sub-factors. i. e., hypochondriasis, depression, paranoia, and anxiety tendencies. Psychosocial variables have classified into 7 factors: sexes, ages, areas of growth, academic careers, occupations, religions, and family make-ups.
The subjects were 910 Korean middle-aged men and women sampled using the stratified sampling method.
The results of this study were summerized as follows.
1. The personality characteristics of Korean middle-aged persons were shown;
1) Adjustment, they considered the limitness of their capacities and desired to cultivate their skills and know ledges for adaptations.
2) Stability, they generally viewed their lifes affirmatively and handled the difficult things effectively.
3) Interioity, they appreciated their lifes and evaluated their results for sons and daughters.
4) Affiliation, they valued human relations as like friendships and were generous.
5) Generativity, they were delighted with working and concerned with the next generations in a broad sense.
6) Achievement, they made efforts for the sake of their lifes with volition and sincerity.
7) Responsibility, they carried out their tasks to the end.
8) Activity, they had much to do and looked for a new things.
9) Aggression, they wanted to have a last bling in life, before old age catched up them.
10) Masculinity, they adhered to their belief.
11 ) Clinical dimension, they showed hypochondriasis and depression tendencies.
2. In the personality characteristics and psychosocial variables of Korean middle-aged persons ;
1) The personality characteristics which have shown the meaningful differences according to their sexes were the stability, the generativity, the achievement, aggression, the masculinity, and the all clinical scales.
2) on the contrary, there were no meaningful difference to the personality characteristics according to their ages.
3) The personality characteristics which have shown the meaningful relations in accordance with their areas of growth( I )(large city, small city, rural community)were the masculinity of discriptive scale. And, the personality characteristics which have shown the meaningful relations in accordance with their areas of growth ( II ) (Gyungee, Gangwon, Chungcheung, Jaenla, Gyengsang) were the adjustment, the interiority, the generativity, the achievement. And the activity of discriptive scales.
4) The personality characteristics which have shown the meaningful relation according to the levels of their academic careers were almost all the discriptive scales and the clinical scales.
5) The personality characteristics which have shown the meaningful relations according to the level: of their occupations(in men's cases: profession and technition, management and administration, Business, sale and service, argriculture•forestry•stockbreeding and fisheries, skill and prodution, inoccupation) were the achievement, and the responsivilty of the descriptive scales. On the contrary, there were no meaningful difference to the personality characteristics in accordance with their occupations(in women's cases; occupation, homemakers).
6) The personality characteristics which have shown the meaningful difference in accordance with their religion(religion and irreligion groups) were the adjustment the stability, the responsibility, and the activity of discriptive scales.
7) But there were no meaningful relations to the personality charateristics according to their family make-ups.
