교육의 자율성 논의는 그것이 이루어지는 수준에 따라, 그리고 사회와 국가에 대한 시각에 따라 제기되는 문제의 양태가 다르다. 교육의 자율성에 대한 논의들은 그것이 교육의 본질에 대한 가치주장인가 아니면 교육현상에 대한 사실판단인가에 따라, 교육자율당위 론과 교육자율부당론, 교육자율가능론, 교육자율불가능론의 네가지 범주로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 그리고 교육의 자율성은 교육활동, 교육기관, 교육제도, 국가의 수준에서 논의될 수 있지만, 그 중에서도 교육의 자율성 문제가 가장 의미있게 적용될 수 있는 것은 교육제도 수준에서의 자율성 문제이다. 사회적 제도의 한 부문으로서의 교육은 지식의 교수를 그 본질적 기능으로 삼고 있으며, 지식탐구에 내재해 있는 합리성은 교육의 자율성을 사실적으로 가능하게 하는 동시에 그러한 합리성을 추구하기 위해 교육의 자율성이 당위 적으로 요청되기도 한다.

영어 초록

The arguments on the autonomy of education can be classified into four categories depending on whether they are value judgements or factual descriptions: 1) the “ Normative -Affirmation theory on the autonomy of education," 2) the “ Normative-Negation theory on the autonomy of education， " 3) the "Factual- Possibility theory on the autonomy of education," and 4) the "Factual-Impossibility theory on the autonomy of education."
And the problems posed in the arguments on the autonomy of education are different depending on the theoretical perspectives to the society and the state presupposed in the arguments: the pluralist, the managerial, the class, and the wholistic perspective， and on the levels of the arguments: an educational activity level, an educational agent or an individual school level, an educational system level, and a state level. But “ the autonomy of education" means the autonomy of education as a part of the social system in a strict sense. That of educational activities or agents presuppose the autonomy of education as a social institution, and the problem of the autonomy of education is dissoved on the level of the state.
Traditionally, education as a social institution has its major function teaching knowledge. Knowledge does not consist of fragmentary propositions， but rather a coherent system of ideas, beliefs, and judgements. Knowledge as a system is what human beings, i.e., rational beings, have achieved through their history of persistent efforts to understand the world rationally. Not only the autonomy of education is desired normatively because knowledge must be inquired freely without external control and constraints, but also its rational nature provides education with the factual ground of autonomy. Education develops rationality by teaching such knowledge and the development of rationality builds, in its turn, the basis of the autonomy of education.
