Since a symbol impregnates meanings it is, though not the only way, the best way to interpret somethingunknown that cannot be fully explained through language. If a symbol can be completely interpreted with
no reservation, its true function as a psychological symbol is lost. When we talk about a symbolic meaning,
this meaning is found not in the language that directly designates a symbol with a “signified” but in the
process through which this meaning is made into an image in one’s mind. We can study human capabilities
to create a symbol through dreams. It is in dreams that we find unique expressions of the unconscious and
a rich soil for cultivating symbols. This study explores the symbolic meaning of a white tiger from the
perspective of analytical psychology by examining not only the stories relating to a white tiger in Korean
mythology, folklore, and folk paintings, but also its appearance in the author’s dreams. Tigers hold great
importance in Korean history, culture and tradition in many different aspects with various images. A tiger
appears in the founding mythology of Korean people as an impatient animal who couldn't become a human
because he could not endure 100 days of fasting. But tigers that are depicted in old cave paintings and on
other cultural assets are interpreted as being numinous or even sacred. Meanwhile, we can identify three
types of tiger symbolism in Korean folklore: divine tiger with godly power, human tiger who knows filial
duty, and beastly animal who isn't yet fully differentiated into consciousness. In this study a white tiger is
shown as numinous tiger who as divine power. Especially in folklores a white tiger appears as mountain
spirit, or a guide of one's soul, or an image of numinous animal whose symbolic meaning can be an
archtype for Self. White is the color of light while black is the color of darkness. As a wild animal
embodying the divine, a white tiger also represents both darkness and light, just as one expects the
concept of “Self” to be in analytical psychoanalysis. This study seeks to highlight the importance of the
enlightening process in which one recognizes and understands the message of the unconscious in symbols, one
good example of which is a white tiger analyzed through the analytical psychology.
