This thesis tried to consider that the concept of 'sage' formed a seriesof ideas through the history of chinese thought. It also revealed that the
concept of 'sage' originally meant 'the intelligent and sagacious', but
came to have two implications of 'a morally perfect person of beauty'
and 'a politically prominent figure' in the period of Chunqiuzhanguo(春
As passing through Pre-Chin era(先秦時代), Confucian became sacred
and was conferred various names and titles, finally becoming the object
to be worshipped through sacrificial rite. Therefore 'sage' has come to
have the meaning of 'being sacred'. Coming to the period of Song &
Ming Dynasty, under the extensive influence of the ideological slogan of
"Learning leads to sage[聖人可學而至]", 'Science of sage' and 'Dao(道) of
sage' became the symbol of Confucian culture and Confucianism
became 'Science of being sage'. Especially when the Yang-ming Xinxue
(陽明心學) era arrived, thorough internalization of sage occurred from
the standpoint of heart's core. Accordingly, sage became the symbol of
Liangzhi(良知) in human mind and sage were no more mystical
beginning to flow toward the secularization and nonaristocratization.
