The purpose of this study was (1) to investigate the performance of poor comprehenders and normal readers on aset of memory||| language and higher-order processing tasks||| (2) to identify the best predictor of reading
comprehension for each group. Eighty students in 3 to 6 grades participated in this study: 40 poor comprehenders
and 40 normal readers. The poor comprehenders were characterized by poor reading comprehension skills with normal
decoding skills. The students were participated in three experimental sessions. A decoding test||| a sentence
comprehension test and a nonverbal cognitive test were administered in the first session. A memory test||| a language
test and a higher-order process test were administered in the second session. The reading comprehension test at text
level was administered in the third session. The memory test tapped 3 different types of memory ; short-term
memory||| digit-working memory and verbal working memory. The Language test was composed of a confrontation
naming test||| a analogical reasoning test||| a grammatical judgment test and a syntactic awareness test. An inferencing
task was used to test higher-order processing skills. For data analysis||| a multivariate analysis of variance(MANOVA)
was carried out to explore group differences across memory(short-term||| digit working memory and verbal working
memory)||| language(confrontation naming||| analogical reasoning||| grammatical judgment and syntactic awareness)|||
higher-order process(inferencing)||| and reading comprehension(sentence and text comprehension). To identify the best
predictor of reading comprehension for each group||| a Pearson correlate analysis and a stepwise multiple regression
were carried out. The results were as follows: The MANOVA revealed a significant effect of group||| with the poor
comprehenders performing less well than the normal readers on the combined dependent variables(Wilks' Lambda =
.290||| F(10||| 69)=16.863||| p<.001). In the follow-up univariate analyses||| significant differences between the two groups
were noted in the verbal working memory||| confrontation naming||| analogical reasoning||| grammatical judgment and
syntactic awareness||| inferencing||| sentence comprehension and text comprehension||| but not in short-term memory and
digit working memory. In correlation analysis||| on the data from the normal readers||| their reading comprehension
scores were significantly correlated with only three independent measures; analogical reasoning||| confrontation naming
and inference. Poor readers' reading comprehension scores were significantly correlated with all measures except for
digit working memory. The stepwise multiple regression indicated that the best predictor of reading comprehension
for normal readers was analogical reasoning(R²=55.4%). And the best predictors of reading comprehension of poor
readers were confrontation naming||| verbal working memory and analogical reasoning(R²= 71.7%).
