This qualitative study was conducted to investigate the patterns and structures of conflicts between students with disabilitiesand common students in inclusive classes in middle school with two students with disabilities and four common students as
participants.
Focusing on the research questions set in the study, the investigator collected data on conflict experiences through in-depth
interviews, participant observation, and researcher's memos to examine the patterns and structures of various conflicts that the
subjects experienced in inclusive classes in middle school. Collected data were entered and analyzed with a qualitative research
analysis program called NVivo 10. The data entered in the program were encoded through repetitive comparative analysis,
conceptualized as nodes in the analysis system, and categorized into the upper and lower category of similar concepts.
First, the first research question regarding the patterns of conflicts between the two student groups in inclusive classes in
middle school was examined. As a result, there were six major patterns of conflicts between them: the first one was “I am
like you” vs. “You are different from us,” a conflict pattern derived from common students' prejudices and discriminations
against students with disabilities; the second one was “the class for me” vs. “Our class,” a conflict pattern caused by the
self-centered attitude of students with disabilities and the low sympathy level of common students; the third conflict pattern
stemmed from the soft behavior of common students and the unique behavior of students with disabilities; the fourth conflict
pattern was caused by the suffering of silence and patience among students with disabilities as the weak minority and the
duties of assistance and consideration among common students; the fifth one was “Don't treat them badly” vs. “Don't
meddle,” a conflict pattern over students with disabilities among common students; and the final one was a positive conflict
pattern to raise the sympathy level and discover the values of inclusive classes through conflicts.
Then the second research question regarding the structures of conflicts between students with disabilities and common
students in inclusive classes in middle school was examined. The factors to trigger conflicts between the two student groups
in inclusive classes were physical, verbal, behavioral, psychological, and cognitive ones in a conflict hierarchy of superficial and
deep psychological structure.
The diagram of conflicting relationships between the two student groups in inclusive classes highlighted central conflicts
caused by repetitive confrontations due to heterogeneity between them and the vicious cycle of conflicts. There were also
derivative conflicts between common students that were involved in the concerned conflicts and common students that
advocated students with disabilities. The influence of teacher interference turned out to be an important variable.
They participated in conflicts in the forms of the arson, extinction, reporter, and passerby group, acquiring the abilities of
solving conflicts and making a contribution to the stability and harmony of inclusive classes by regulating conflicts and
promoting reintegration in those classes.
