오욱환 교수는 소위 “변혁적 교육사회학 이론”이 필요하다는 대담한, 그러나 실질이 결여된, 주
장을 제기하였다. 주장도 문제이나 더 심각한 것은 그것을 하게 된 이유이다. 다 알듯이, 최근 풍성
해진 조사 자료를 활용한 연구가 주목할 만한 성과를 보이고 있다. 그는 이 추세를 “사실을 기술하
는 글들이 늘어” 점차 “이론이 사라지고 논쟁이 줄어들고” 있다면 대안으로 변혁론을 찾아 학문의
정체성을 되찾아야 한다고 믿고 있다.
민주화 과정에서 교육학 포함 사회과학자 일부 핵심 세력은 소위 사회구성체이론과 같이 허상과
수사 또는 정치 선동으로 꽉 찬 소위 “이론”에 몰입하여 변혁을 추구하였다. 좌파 세력이 10년여
정권을 장악하였고 혁명의 지속을 꿈꾸었다. 이 시기 매우 주목할 학문 발전이 이루어지고 있었다.
맑시즘의 부침과는 독립적으로, 교육사회학 특유 전통인 학교효과, 사회이동, 조직이론, 학교 문화
풍토 분석 등은 수준과 분석 깊이를 더하며 꾸준히 발달하였다. 특히, 80년대 후반 이후 학교효과
연구의 부활과 그것의 기초가 되는 방법론의 발달(예, HLM: 위계선형모형)은 괄목할 만한 것이다.
학교교육 자료의 다층구조를 엄격하게 분석하기 위해 개발된 방법으로 다른 학문 영역에까지 넓게
적용되고 있다. 학생들의 성취 수준 결정과정에서 가정 배경이 감당하기 어려울 정도의 영향을 미
치나 학교 수준에서 주목할 만한 효과를 내는 요인이 계속 드러나 관심이 고조되고 있다. 최근 우
리 학계 활발해진 실증연구는 그 경향의 반영이다.
오교수가 제안한 변혁이론은 지난 정권이 추진한 변혁(양극화 해소)을 가속화 하거나 그 이론을
제공하자는 것도 아니다. 사구체 논쟁과 같은 “이론 논박”으로 회귀하지 않고 사실을 들여다보는
연구를 지킬 필요가 있다. 복잡한 교육현실을 사실과 증거에 비추어 조명하는 연구가 이후 학문발
전의 동력이 될 것이다. 교육정책이 특정 정파나 계층 이익 관철과 관련되어 투쟁처럼 진행되는 이
런 어려운 현실에서 실사구시 연구는 논쟁을 일으키기도 하나 잘못된 쟁점을 바로 잡기도 한다. 이
렇게 교육사회학은 성숙하는 것이다.

영어 초록

In his very provocative arguments with few substantial grounds, Prof. Ookwahn Oh, the former
President of the Society, suggested that recharged efforts to construct a new theory for transformation
of society and education as well is needed in order to pursue development in the field of sociology
of education in Korea. His frustrations seemed to come from a recent blossom of, to use his own
words, "descriptive and fact-finding research projects." Using as an example of what he termed
so-called "Marxist sociology of education," he tried to change the course to theoretical discussion and
debate. There is no point in reiterating that highly abstract and sophisticated theoretical debates have
been a moving force of neo-marxist sociology of school curriculum, which constitutes a major part, but
not all, of sociology of education for the last four decades or so. In doing this, he has fallen into a
fatal error to sustain a rather arbitrary division between empirical scrutiny and theoretical imagination.
Sufficient it is to underline the origin of Marxist theoretical brilliance: a serious interrogation of reality,
say data. The best example of analytic Marxism is in fact a theoretical informed empirical study.
Theories do less make sense if stranded alone out of reality in education as well as society at large.
In my counter arguments to his suggestion for a new sociology of education for social
transformation, we should not readily given up our very long traditions of empirical research, best
shown in status attainment models, school effect studies(newly using HLM), and the like. I could
and should add another series of equally remarkable traditions of research on education: participatory
observation studies, comparative studies, & historical sociological approaches. As a concerned citizen,
we could dream of the coming of liberated society via some changes in schools, but it is
irresponsible to argue that theoretical discourses in transformative education could bring about a
transformation articulated in them. Major revolutions in Western societies have been, to every
theoretician's surprise, products of an unintended consequence of social action. To empower next
generation of sociologists of education up to the world-class level, we better ask them never lose
close contacts with unimaginably complex reality of education in Korea. Upgrading empirical tradition
must lead them to a long-waited developmental stage of constructing sociology of Korean education.
