Drawing on first-second wave data from Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS), this studyexplores the structural relationships between the determinants of subjective quality of life of
middle school students, and examines how the relationships vary by gender using structural
equation modeling method. The results show that students’ self-concept and relationships with
their family, peer students, and teachers exert a significant direct effect on their subjective
quality of life. Students’ self-concept is in turn noticeably influenced by parental socioeconomic
status and relationships with their family, peer students, and teachers. In addition, students’
positive relationships with their classmates and teachers tend to increase their quality of life.
However, students’ academic achievement turns out to be slightly negatively associated with
their quality of life, which can be attributed to fierce competition and pressure among those
students with strong academic performance. Meanwhile, the results from multi-group analysis
exhibit that the determinants of subjective quality of life of middle school students vary to
some extent by gender. Specifically, subjective quality of life of female students appears more
susceptive to social relationships within school than that of male students. It suggests that
effective policy measures for increasing students’ well-being need to take into account gender
differences in the determinants of subjective quality of life.
