Environmental psychology, a relatively new yet consolidatedfield of research when the sustainability paradigm wasproposed at the Rio Summit, has concentrated efforts aroundinvestigating the impact of human behaviour on theenvironment and the factors that determine that behaviour.Studies on cognitive aspects such as environmental perception,attitudes, literacy, concern and environmental knowledgehave produced very interesting and useful results. Others onmore emotional aspects such as place identity and attachment,feelings toward place, values and so on have also producedinteresting insights. There is a huge and growing body ofresearch on how to promote education for urban sustainability(Garc?a-Mira and Dumitru, 2014).Research on the factors that determine responsibleenvironmental behaviour has identified different categoriesof variable that can have an impact. Most of this research hasbeen done with adults and comparatively little research existson young people’s formative experiences and their influenceon pro-environmental behaviour, specifically in the urbancontext. The value-belief-norm theory of environmentalbehaviour (Stern et al., 1999), emphasized values as aprecursor for pro-environmental behaviour in the sense thatpeople need to value the environment for its own sake inorder to mobilize for action, both at the individual and thecollective level (Chawla and Flanders-Cushing, 2007).Besides the appropriate values, people need to have theknowledge necessary to understand the consequences of theiractions on the environment (they need to be literateenvironmental users) and they have to perceive that socialnorms promote pro-environmental action.But people also live and act in very complex systems thatafford possibilities for certain types of behaviours and restrictothers (Gibson, 1986). For people to act in accordance withtheir values there need to be possibilities for action inbuiltinto the physical and social infrastructures of everyday life.Gardner and Stern (2002) have noted that the structuralbarriers to action, such as the costs of action in terms of timeand resources explain to a large degree when people will act in line with their values and when they will not. Many ofthese barriers are built into the fabric of our daily lives in theform of political regulations, economic and social practicesthat become the “normal” way of doing things and areimpossible to ignore.
