The present study examined the effects of child maltreatment and neglect on adolescents' aggression, social withdrawal, and depression, focusing on the moderating roles of closeness to teacher and peer
attachment. Using the data from the 2012 Korea Child Youth Panel Surveys, this study analyzed 2,351
3rd graders (1,140 boys and 1,119 girls) in middle schools. The data were analyzed by means of
descriptive statistics and hierarchical regressions. The moderating effects of closeness to teacher and peer
attachment were examined by using the analysis procedures proposed by Baron and Kenny (1986) and
Aiken and West (1991).
The results of this study were as follows. First, child maltreatment and neglect had positive influences
on adolescents' aggression and depression. Second, the lower the levels of closeness to teacher and peer
attachment, the higher the level of adolescents' social withdrawal. Similarly, the higher the level of peer
attachment, the higher the level of aggression and depression. Third, the moderating effects of closeness to
teacher and peer attachment were partially significant. The influence of child maltreatment on social
withdrawal was significant when the level of closeness to teacher was high, but not when it was low
whereas closeness to teacher buffered the detrimental effect of child neglect on social withdrawal. Child
neglect had a greater influence on depression when the level of peer attachment was high, compared to
when it was low.
