The material world is full of objects which human beings have made, used, or modified. Peoplehave created them for their purposes, which gives every object its own significance of existence.
Objects contain the human's trace and intention. Objects are gathered as a collection while collecting.
As part of a collector, a collection is an important vehicle to reveal who he/she is, which has a very
close relationship with the life of the collector. However, the collection would have a big influence
to shape a world view or values depending upon who owns the collection and how to interpret it
since the collection represents specific methods to construct the relation with the world.
Earlier in the western Europe, people collected a great number of objects through a range of
methods and routes, including invasion and overseas expeditions. They did not just accumulated
souvenirs or fetish objects. But they also raked as many objects as they could systematically from
all over the world as the Enlightenment and colonialism developed from the 17th century onward.
Amassed collections covered almost every field, which were established as disciplines of
archaeology, anthropology, ethnography and natural sciences through systematic categorisation and
research. Coupled with the development of disciplines, eurocentrism was surged that Europe and
western people were superior to non-Europeans as the centre of the world.
Such disciplines from a European-centred perspective came partly from the imbalance of cultural
resource of museum collections. This international imbalance of cultural resource also portrays the
imbalance of wealth, thereby museums and their collections have become a precious instrument to
apply their national cultural policies. Most large museums in the world are not only leading
organisations to symbolise cultural abundance of their nations, but also crucial economic assets to
obtain tourism income by drawing visitors as popular tourist attractions. The imbalance from museum
collections affects those who have been ‘robbed’ their cultural heritage within their own countries.
This is evident to the North America Indians, the Maori people in Australia and the indigenous
people in Central and South America who lost their own lands and sovereign power by European
expansionism and imperialism.
