This study was conducted to test the moderating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between academic stress and depression among sixth graders. From the result of this study, social work practice and policy implications towards helping children cope with their academic stress are made. The data were collected from 208 sixth graders attending elementary schools in Daejeon Metropolitan areas. The findings of this study and social work practice and policy related implications are the following. First, socio-demograhic factors had an effect on academic stress. Second, the academic stress had an effect on depression. Third, children’s self-esteem had moderating effects on the relationship between their academic stress and depression. From these findings, authors suggest that the school should implement systematic and periodic programs to prevent students’ academic stress and depression. Elementary school social workers should implement self-esteem boosting programs that would empower students to focus and draw upon their successes rather than limitations which will ultimately prevent students from experiencing depressive symptoms.
