This study explores how sandtray therapy is instrumental in decreasing impulseand improving self esteem for middle school students who have adaptation problems
in school.
The research subject was a 14-year-old middle school boy who had trouble with
impulsive behavior and truancy. The sandtray therapy was administered for 40
minutes once a week for 14 weeks from July 5th 2012 to October 10th 2012. This
study carried out pre and post tests for index of school life adjustment, impulse,
and self esteem, and also measured changes and progress in the sandtray therapy.
Also, this study analyzed the linguistic representations and content in sessions.
The study results are as follows: First, the sandtray therapy effected school life
adjustment for the maladjusted middle school student. Second, the sandtray therapy
reduced impulses for the maladjusted middle school student. Third, the sandtray
therapy improved self esteem for the maladjusted middle school student. Also, in
conclusion of the analysis, when the research target first expressed himself, he was
defensive. But with the therapy, he started showing the stage called "animals and
plants", which showed the inner unconscious with self defense, the stage of "a
struggle", which expressed negative feeling through diverse fighting and dying, and
the stage called "the adjustment", which showed their potential adapted to reality.
These stages were all observed in the sandtray in the manner that Kalff described.
As he progressed through sandtray therapy, he could control impulses himself
through understanding and representation of his feelings, and self esteem was
improved through self-insight and a sense of achievement. That way, the sandtray
therapy helps adolescents to adjust at school, to heal internal wounds, and to grow
inside the sandtray which is place of liberty and safety. Consequently, this study
shows that sandtray therapy gives adolescents adjusting at school the opportunity
for self expression and the sense of security. There were positive changes in
adjustment at school, impulse reduction, and self esteem.
