This study examined the relationship between mother's overprotection andadolescent's anxiety and aggression. In order to expand the study on these
relationship, special attention was given to the possible effects of mediation on
adolescent's negative meta-cognition. The participants were 252 1st and 2nd graders
of middle school students (147 boys and 105 girls) residing in Chung Nam, Dae Jeon
city in South Korea.
It was found that adolescents who perceive that their mother's were overprotective
have more anxiety and aggression. In addition, adolescents who have a high
perception of mother's overprotection have high negative beliefs about
uncontrollability thoughts and danger and lack cognitive confidence. Lastly, negative
beliefs about the uncontrollability thoughts and danger and lack of cognitive
confidence have partial mediating effects on the relationship between mother's
excessive protection and adolescent's anxiety and aggression.
Consequently, it was found that mother's overprotection not only has negative direct
effects on adolescent's anxiety and aggression but also has effects on their negative
meta-cognition; and these effects indirectly influence on the anxiety and aggression.
