According to Emmanuel Levinas(1906-1995), pain is the statusof passivity on the whole. Pain implies that the hope of relief is
lost and the initiative of life is deprived of. Namely, human being
is in the status of passivity which he can not do anything by
himself. Thus, his sensibility refuses any pain.
However, rationality accepts pain willingly. Human being's
mentality is hard to step upward without taking pain as fruit
becomes ripe by enduring harsh wind, rain and burning sunshine.
Human being with a great virtue is turned out throughout enormous
pain. His mental profundity appears well when he is in big
difficulty.
According to the Works of Mencius, the human being who gains
fame had spent longer painful time before he was appointed in the
world. The painful time is the process of maturing himself. No
human being is matured without pain. The great human being is
trained by pain. He endures not only suffering mind and bodily
trouble but also starvation. He becomes a great human being as
he endures such pain. Pain makes human being stronger and
recovers the subjectivity of real human being. If pain does not
exist, probably moral issues may not be raised. Therefore, pain is
the inception of securing subjectivity.
If pain does not mean anything, the life not being escapable
from pain does not mean either. Without pain, there is no need to
cultivate virtue probably. Pain is the indispensable process of
cultivating virtue. The essence of pain is the necessary factor of
building up virtue and becoming the center of real human being.
Confucius indicated that a man of virtue's pain does not lay on
external environment but on the shameless and amoral mind.
Consequently, from the viewpoint of Confucianism, pain does not
imply nothing but it is only the step and the process of cultivating
human being internally.
