CAMPUS Asia
CAMPUS Asia
This study investigated the effect and barriers of the CAMPUS Asia project among
China, Japan, and korea from Korean participants students’ perspectives, which has
its pilot project started from 2012. We conducted in-depth interviews with 16 Korean
students who attended universities in China and/or Japan through the CAMPUS
Asia program. Findings showed that participants experienced change to understand
China and Japan positively and perceive China, Japan, and korea objectively. They
also experience further developments such as setting detailed career plans and
showing academic and cultural developments so that they can become experts in the
East Asia region. However, we also found barriers to accomplish the goals of the
program and maximize its positive effects. At the program level, little was the
CAMPUS Asia program differentiated from general exchange programs at
universities. Participants also experience difficulties in their academic and daily lives
due to the lack of administrative support. In addition, they pointed out the issue of
quality of classes and their liberty to choose classes outside the program. More
importantly, difficulty in interacting with other participating students in the CAMPUS
Asia program, either from other countries or even the same institution or Korea, was
perceived to cause difficulty in developing sense of belonging and identity for the
CAMPUS Asia program. Considering recent relationship among three countries for
their economic dependency and political tensions, student exchange among them is
needed more than anything for building the East Asian community, promoting the
regionalization in this area, and educating future leaders for it. Against this
background and research findings, we provided multiple suggestions to implement the program successfully and maximize its positive effects
