The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of the reality therapy group counseling program oninternal-external control levels, interpersonal relationship, and happiness of the patients with schizophrenia. The
program in this study was developed by Park(2002) and was adjusted to fit the situation of the patients. The
subjects were 16 patients having stayed in the mental care facilities in D city over 10 years and they were
divided randomly into two groups, one experimental group and one control group. The measurement instruments
consist of the Scale of Internal-External Control, the Scale of Interpersonal Relationship, and the Concise Measure
of Subjective Well-Being. The data were analyzed by using a t-test and ANCOVA. The main results were as
follows. First, the experimental group showed a significant improvement in internal control level but no significant
improvement in external control level. Second, the experimental group showed a significant improvement in
interpersonal relationships (its sub-factors of satisfaction, peace of mind, sensitivity, and comprehensive ability), but
no significant improvement in its sub-factors of communication, friendliness and openness. Third, the experimental
group showed a significant improvement in happiness (its sub-factor of positive emotion) but no significant
improvement in its sub-factors of satisfaction and negative emotion. Finally, the implications of the findings are
discussed in the context of counseling for the patients with schizophrenia.
