The aim of this research is to compare similarities and differences in the enlightenment concept of theBuddhism and the awareness of the Gestalt therapy. While enlightenment of the Buddhism is leading to
a state where all kinds of sufferings disappear through the change of perceptions, awareness is experiencing
important phenomena as such as they appear without defending oneself from or avoiding them. There are
some similarities between the enlightenment and the awareness. First, the enlightenment is knowing
everything as they exist, and the awareness is recovering one's original nature. Second, interrelatedness
concept of the Buddhism and intersubjectivity of the Gestalt therapy are similar in that both advocate for
interdependence of all phenomena in the world that cannot exist separately. Third, one can reach the
enlightenment by abandoning all desires and attachment according to the Buddhism and the background
is believed to be restructured up by letting go of clinging and giving up of avoidance in Gestalt therapy.
The fertile void concept Perls mentioned means nearly the same as the emptiness concept of the
Buddhism. Forth, both the Buddhism and Gestalt therapy emphasize here and now. Fifth, Buddhism
teaches that three poisons [greed, anger, absurdity] prevent one from realizing the truth, and the Gestalt
therapy assumes that contact boundary disturbances cause sufferings. Sixth, while one can get
enlightenment through meditation 8 right paths and Mindfulness in Buddhism, one can develop awareness
through continuous exercises and training in Gestalt therapy. The main difference between the two is
however that enlightment can be achieved by experiencing the non-self by recognizing mind and matter,
whereas awareness in Gestalt therapy is attained by the Self, which is the system of contact at the
boundary. Although there are common aspects between the enlightenment and awareness, there are also
differences between the two in the sense that the Buddhist training is religious character.
